High Perfumery Nicolas de Barry

An encounter between two enthusiasts: designer Nicolas de Barry and luxury goods expert Eddy Blanchet
Like an alchemist seeking the formula for making gold, Nicolas de Barry is one of those master perfumers who has made perfumery to be ranked as a work of art. Working in his castle near Blois, he is busy rethinking forgotten scents.
Before becoming a perfumer, in high demand amongst big guns of this industry, Nicolas de Barry has lived many lives which have helped shape in one way or the other his true passion for scents. Sociologist and Political scientist by training, he won a “prix d’histoire (history prize) from the French Academy. He has published about 15 books and has even worked as a diplomat. Having gained experience through meetings with Edmond Roudnitska, creator of Diorissimo and Eau sauvage for Dior, and Françoise Marin, former director of the Givaudan Roure Perfumery School in Grasse, he joined the perfume industry in 1992.

Nicolas de Barry works with unusual scents and revives emotions of the past. Thanks to him, high-end perfumery has regained its prestige and attracts enthusiasts eager to learn from the master.

As for the luxury goods expert, Eddy Blanchet is a dynamic man in his forties, raised in an aesthetic environment. Having learnt the secrets of perfumes from Nicolas de Barry, the latter thought him the reconstitution of old perfumes such as kyphi, used in ancient Egypt in solid form and Hungary water, said to have many medical virtues. Being an industrious student, he already established an olfactory heritage in France and the Mediterranean through the flowers in the garden of his childhood home, iodized sprays from the seaside in Vendée and the fruity and aromatic sunflower from Lebanon where he lived for several years. Coming from a business school, he came and completed his training as a perfumer with courses from the Ecole du Louvre where he studied the history of perfumes and the cultural uses of scents. He also went to the prestigious Ecole Internationale de Parfumerie de Grasse where he now teaches.

With a long career as an international manager in big luxury perfume houses, Eddy Blanchet falls under the category of creators of history-filled traditional products. Lecturer and member of the Société Française des Parfumeurs (French Society of Perfumers), it is only natural that he joined forces with Nicolas de Barry to make the wider public discover the collection of historical perfumes.

The quality commitment

Anxious to make perfumes as it was done in the eighteenth century, Nicolas de Barry travelled the world in search of natural raw materials such as aloes wood, more commonly known as oud, rare and precious wood, blue lotus, the ylang and Grasse rose.

Thanks to him, high-end perfumery has regained its prestige and attracts enthusiasts eager to learn from the master.
